A Traditional Boat Builder is ongoing project/photo essay, documenting the routines and working lives of individuals within an isolated community of traditional boat builders, in Cornwall, UK and the story of their craft which risks being lost to time.
This project explores the themes of craftsmanship and the beauty of slow, traditional work. It highlights the value of working with natural materials and the importance of industries rooted in traditional methods, especially within the current global environmental context. The project captures a lifestyle and craft which blends functionality with artistry, deeply embedded in native Cornish maritime culture.
The photographs reflect on how traditional boatbuilding—with its emphasis on craftsmanship, slowness, and manual labour—has come to be devalued. Despite offering a rare and necessary counter-narrative to the prevailing values of modern society: profit, speed, and digital dependency. The series examines how slowness, skill, and hand labour—particularly from an environmental perspective— embody resilience and meaning in a rapidly changing world.
The images capture the remaining traditional shipwrights, along with their workspaces and materials, documenting a way of life and knowledge that risks being lost to time.
